E.C. Woodcock
E. C. Woodcock was a graduate of St. John's College, Cambridge, and was a young lecturer at Manchester before being appointed to the chair of Latin at Durham in 1948, when it was revived after the Second World War. He was joined by J. B. Skemp as professor of Greek in 1950, and the two of them presided over the post-war recovery and growth of the Department of Classics. Woodcock voluntarily retired in 1966, and died not long after. Woodcock authored A New Latin Syntax (Methuen, 1959; reprinted by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers and Bristol Classical Press, 1985, 1987).
