H.J. Rose
H. J. Rose (1883-1961) was a gifted, well-known Rhodes scholar who was professor of Latin at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, from 1919 to 1927 and professor of Greek at the University of St Andrews from 1927 to 1953. Rose received BAs from McGill and Oxford. His talent for clear communication; his expertise in ancient religion; and his immense learning in folklore, folktales, and anthropology enabled him to publish a wide variety of insightful resources suitable for general readers and experts alike. Rose authored A Handbook of Greek Literature (Methuen, 1934, 1950; reprinted by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1996), A Handbook of Latin Literature (Methuen, 1936, 1950; reprinted by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1996), Primitive Culture in Greece (Methuen, 1925), Primitive Culture in Italy (Methuen, 1926), Modern Methods in Classical Mythology (W.
