William Smith
William Smith (1813-1893) taught at University College School in Hampstead, England. Smith studied at University College and in 1830 began legal studies at Gray's Inn but left to take a position at University College School. He received honorary degrees from several universities, including the University of Oxford and the University of Dublin, and was knighted in 1892. Smith was the author of a number of works including dictionaries of the Latin language, Greek and Roman history, antiquities, mythology, biography, and geography, and Old and New Testament history. He authored with Theophilus D. Hall Smith's English-Latin Dictionary (American Book Company, 1871; reprinted by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 2000).
