Joan Burton, PhD
Joan B. Burton is director of the Individual Studies Program as well as the Federal Semester Program and the Global Semester in Washington, DC; she is also affiliate professor of classics at the University of Maryland. Burton was previously professor and chair of the Department of Classical Studies at Trinity University, San Antonio, and is now professor emerita. She received a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. Burton is the author of A Byzantine Novel: Drosilla and Charikles (Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 2004), Theocritus's Urban Mimes: Mobility, Gender, and Patronage (University of California Press, 1995), and several articles and book chapters.

Niketas Eugenianos's Drosilla and Charikles is one of four existing Byzantine (12th-century) Greek novels. These novels represent the rebirth of the ancient novel after a hiatus of eight centuries in the deeply Christian world of Constantinople. Written under the Komnenian dynasty and during the time of the crusades these novels revived the pagan Greek world with its pagan gods and beliefs, and also reflected the customs and beliefs of their own time.
