Waldo E. Sweet, PhD
Waldo E. Sweet (1912-1992) taught Latin at several preperatory schools in the eastern United States for nearly two decades before being appointed to the faculty of the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan in 1953. He received a BA from Amherst College, an MA in Greek from Columbia University, and an MA and PhD in Greek history from Princeton University. Sweet was recognized throughout his career at the University of Michigan as an innovator both for his teaching methods and for the instructional materials he created. Sweet developed Latin: A Structural Approach (University of Michigan Press, 1957), which was adapted into the Artes Latinae program (Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 2007-2008, 2013). Sweet also authored Vergil's Aeneid: Books I and II (University of Michigan Press, 1960; reprinted by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1983, 2001), Latin Proverbs: Wisdom from Ancient to Modern Times (Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 2002), Sport and Recreation in Ancient Greece: A Sourcebook with Translations (Oxford University Press, 1987), and A Course on Words (University of Michigan Press, 1989).
