Madeleine Henry, PhD

Madeleine Henry is professor and head of the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University. She received a PhD in classics from the University of Minnesota. Henry was previously professor of classical studies and chair of the Classical Studies Program at Iowa State University. She has taught at Macalester College (St. Paul, MN) and Concordia College (Moorhead, MN). Henry was a Visiting Scholar during 2002-2003 at the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota. Her main research fields are women's history in ancient Greece; the history of literary criticism; encyclopedic literature; and Greek comedy. Henry is the coauthor with Margaret A. Brucia of Horace: Satire 1.9: The Boor (Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1998), the author of Neaera: Writing a Prostitute's Life (Routledge, 2006), and the coeditor with Allison Glazebrook of Greek Prostitutes in the Ancient Mediterranean, 800 BCE-200 CE (University of Wisconsin Press, 2011).
